Parent Mentor

I had very little experience with special education services when my first child, Samantha, was born in 1987. She was in the gifted program. When my daughter turned 14 my husband and I found out we were finally going to have another child.

My son, Joey, was a whole new parenting adventure. He was born at 26 weeks and stayed in the NICU for 77 days. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and seizure disorder. Through Joey we have learned a whole new alphabet: PT, OT, SLP, IEP, DBHDD... and on and on.

One of the things that I have counted on all through the years has been the support and knowledge of other parents. That is why I am so glad to be the parent mentor for White County Schools. It gives me the opportunity to learn and share what I know with other parents.

Parent Mentors...

Provide support and information to parents of children receiving special education services.

One of the requirements of a parent mentor is having a child who has received special education services. Parent Mentors understand what it is like to have a child with a disability.

Parent Mentors work to build relationships with parents and help them create better relationships with their child's school and the community. The goal is to improve outcomes for children with disabilities both in school and after they graduate.

I can help you by finding services and programs for your needs outside of school, attending school meetings, offering training on important disability issues and helping with transition planning.
